Commentary: Not being included by 'our people'
By Alicia Huerta
I am a Mexican-American Chicano raised by a non-immigrant family and English as my first language. Why is this important? I have felt the the diversity and inclusion groups have not told the whole story about how inclusive they are. I was raised accepting all backgrounds and opportunities. Last year I joined a traditional Greek community and I was discluded from those in the MGC. I also don't know Spanish well at all and was let go from the Latino community. My voice isn't every person's voice, but there are a few of us who don't feel included by "our people" because we decided to have "white" friends.
